We're off to meet the mayor...

Bucket bath early in the morning....then white beans for breakfast (which remind me not to ever do that again-they don't sit as well as black beans). Class is at Evan's this week. There was a big eruption from Volcano Fuego during class, which we all got up to see. Never a boring day here. For lunch today, my host mom made homemade french fries and quesedillas--she is ballin! It was a pretty rough walk on a full stomach to Evan's after lunch. So after about an hour of class, we left for the muni to meet the mayor. We were supposed to meet him at 2pm but I think we actually saw him at 4pm....hora chapina aka guatemalan time. Some guy was there with the national government also because he is trying to sell a plan to the mayor to have all the trash from two departments in Guatemala to be brought to our local dump. Then the plan is to have some elaborate system to extract energy from the trash and to have compost. We were later told that this is likely to happen because oftentimes here talk is big but it takes years to formulate and achieve plans of that magnitude. However, they said the process is starting in 15 days and the dump is right across the street from our park. Just another perk of our park's location....sense the sarcasm.

The funeral procession for the cousin happened during our meeting with the mayor. It is tradition that everyone walk through the streets together with the casket and a band, from the house to the church, and then from the church to the cemetary. For dinner, my host mom made me a separate tostada, sans beets because she figured I didn't like them because past volunteers didn't. She is pretty rockin. Got to do some homework and work on vocab.
