So last night was interesting...I read for a while and then got in the bed after making it with my sheets. The noise outside my room was SO LOUD! All the neighborhood dogs started barking at one point, everyone walks down this road it seems and talk very loudly, the chicken buses (aka camionetas) stop right outside my window so I get all lots of brakes, horns, and other noises...it is absolutely shocking how loud it is in my room at night. My family asked this morning if it was loud and if I had brought earplugs. I just chuckled and said it was part of the experience. We had pancakes with some pineapple marmalade and honey, cream cheese and bread, and coffee for breakfast. It was scrumptious. I ate with the parents because the girls sleep very late on Sundays because they get up early during the week.
I showed my family pictures of my family and friends back home and I think they enjoyed it. They even said I'm going to have to come back here for my birthday. They also said my family could stay here anytime. I thought it was so nice of them to already offer all that. They might change their mind though.....I successfully flushed the toilet with a bucket of water after going #2 today. I thought this was an accomplishment and another first! The sky is really clear today and I have a magnificent view of Volcano Fuego. Took another lukewarm bucket bath this morning...
My host sister, Siomi, and her boyfriend, Enrique, took me on a walk. We went to see where Evan and Brianna live. Instead of walking back from Brianna's, we took a tuk tuk, kind of like a go-cart taxi, back home. I talked with mom this afternoon to let the family know I'm doing fine. After that, the family here got in the truck and headed to Antigua and San Felipe. I really liked walking around the park in Antigua. We heard the marimba, Guatemalan instrument, and took in the historic architecture. In San Felipe, we just went to the big Sunday market and my host family ate some "street food", not allowed by Peace Corps. We got home a little after dark and had sandwiches with chips for dinner. I had some deep convos with my host parents. Then Don Julio and I went and looked at the stars. He showed me a few different constellations and then I made some comment about how it was neat that everyone in the world looked at the same stars. Then for some reason, I said the sun is just a big star. Don Julio looked at me, and said no. I said yeah I'm pretty sure it is. We went back and forth a few times and finally agreed we didn't really know, even though I was pretty sure I learned that in third grade science. Lesson learned- be careful what you say! I'm looking forward to my first real shower tomorrow....Feliz Noche!
